1. It all starts with your base! Make sure your face is washed and clean before applying any makeup. You could be sabotaging your makeup from the get go, simply by not cleaning your face before application. Any excess oil or debris on the skin could affect the way your makeup sits and lasts throughout the night.
2. Prep & prime. Find a primer that is right for you. If you have excessively oily skin, perhaps a more mattifying primer may help your foundation adhere to your skin better. Or maybe your skin is dry and a hydrating primer will help bring it back to life and ensure it doesn't go patchy.
3. Really think about your choice of foundation and whether it's best for your skin type.
Foundation is a trial and error thing but once you meet your match, you'll never want to break up! Get to know your skin and make sure to look for key words in a foundations 'finish' to know whether it's going to sit well with your skin.
4. Clean your brushes! Yes it is the biggest chore of all, but it is so important. If you are using brushes with built up makeup on, this will clog your foundation/powder products and cause them to collect on the skin. You may also find a dirty foundation brush won't work the product into the skin as well and this could contribute to your foundation wearing off quickly.
5. Pat, don't swipe! When applying cream or powder products, rather than using your brush in a harsh haphazard swiping manor, try and ease off on the pressure and use a delicate patting motion. Patting the product on will help to set the product into the skin better. By swiping with your
brushes, especially with powders, you may end up disturbing the liquid products underneath and dragging them around - never a good look.
6. Use a setting powder! it's pretty simple, but I bet so many of you don't. If you're applying liquid products to the face but not using powder on top, it stands to reason these liquid products are probably going to end up sliding off throughout the night. Find a powder that works for you and make sure to set those cream products in place.
7. Set with a setting spray! There are so many setting sprays out there, so try and find one best suited to your skin type. If you're very oily, you will want to avoid any setting spray that says 'hydrating' as you will likely find this only enhances your oiliness more. Instead search for a mattifying one that will help to keep oil under control. On the flipside if you're dry, you will love a hydrating or illuminating setting spray to help give your skin a little bit more of a dewiness.
Setting spray will help to keep your makeup flawless all night. (*Top tip* try and find a handbag size one to spritz throughout the night!)
8. There's no harm in taking some blotting papers out with you. They're small and discrete, and when you pop to the girls bathroom you can simply blot your face if you're finding it is looking oily and shiny. This will help to take away that shine and leave your base looking flawless again.
9. Don't touch your face. I know it sounds weird, but you probably don't even realise how much you touch your face. Once you've finished your makeup, think of your face as lava, don't touch it!
If you're constantly touching or rubbing your face, then of course your makeup is going to wear off quicker.
10. Don't text your ex on the night out. You'll probably cry, and that's just a waste of mascara and time in the mirror quite frankly. :)
